PHILIPPINES: SRA says sugar prices higher after VAT applied to sugar

The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) noted an increase in the price of sugar after the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) imposed value added tax (VAT) on raw sugar, according to the Philippines' ABS CBN News.


 

Based on SRA's monitoring for May, the lowest price of raw sugar is now at PHP40 (US$0.89), from a previous low of PHP30 in April.

Public consultations on the implementing rules and regulations of the Sugarcane Industry Development Act are set this month, Sugar Regulatory Administrator Ma. Regina Martin said yesterday.


 

The consultations will be held at the Sugar Regulatory Administration Social Hall in Quezon City today, at the SRA Bacolod Training Hall on May 14 ; and in Davao City on May 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

President Benigno Aquino III presided over a Cabinet executive session at Malacañan Palace yesterday to address the call of the sugar industry for the lifting of Value Added Tax on raw sugar.


 

It was agreed that the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Sugar Regulatory Administration will sit down to come up with a definition of the raw sugar that will be granted exemption from VAT, SRA Administrator Ma. Regina Martin said.

Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District) said he met with Bureau of Internal Revenue chief Kim Henares yesterday and she assured that she will come out soon with a new revenue regulation exempting all small planters with annual gross revenue of P300,000 and below from filing monthly BIR requirements stipulated in Revenue Regulation 11-2014.


 

SRA says dry weather impacting up to 50% of cane

Sugar Regulatory Administrator Ma. Regina Martin said that 40%-50% of the standing sugarcane to be milled next crop year in Negros are the most affected by the dry spell hitting the province, and badly need rain, according to the Philippines' Visayan Daily Star.


 

"If rains will fall, these affected canes may still recover, so we pray for this," she said.

The millable standing canes affected by the dry spell are 20 to 30%, she said.

SRA requesting Capitol to hasten cloud-seeding

The Sugar Regulatory Administration is requesting the Negros Occidental government to hasten its  cloud-seeding operation to mitigate the effect of the prolonged dryspell in the province.


 

In a letter to Gov. Alfredo Marañon, Jr. coursed through the office of Provincial Agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan, Administrator Ma. Regina Martin-Bautista,  said the request of SRA for cloud-seeding is imperative so the next cropping season will not be affected.
