Sugarmen laud lifting of raw sugar EVAT

Sugar leaders welcomed yesterday the issuance by the Bureau of Internal Revenue of Revenue Regulations No. 8-2015, finally amending its definition of raw cane sugar to be exempted from advance Value Added Tax, to include what the industry calls raw sugar.


RR 8-2015, signed by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, on recommendation of BIR Commissioner Kim Jacinto Henares, on May 22 amends the definition of raw cane sugar under RR 6-2015.

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. aired his opposition to the imposition of advance Value Added Tax on raw sugar that, he said, will have dire consequences, especially on small farmers.


The governor spoke at a hearing of the House Committee on Ways and Means on House Bill 5713, authored by Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer (Neg. Occ., 4 th District) at the House of Representatives in Quezon City yesterday afternoon.

Roxas Pacific Bioenergy Corporation, The Philippines' largest bioethanol producer, plans to raise its production capacity by 21% by September via plant debottlenecking and by making improvements to its fermentation processes to raise overall efficiency levels, a company source said Tuesday, according to Platts.


Roxas’ bioethanol plant at Negros Occidental, operated by subsidiary Roxol Bioenergy, has a capacity of 36 million litres/year, which it plans to raise to 40 million.

An 8.8-megawatt (MW) facility using GE’s gas engines will use organic waste from sugar cane and molasses from a nearby alcohol distillery to power 22,000 homes in the Philippines, according to Waste Management World.


Aboitiz Power subsidiary’s Aseagas Corporation, which focuses on renewable energy solutions, has inked an agreement with GE’s Distributed Power business to power its first waste to energy project in Lian in the Province of Batangas, Philippines.
