SRA lowers sugar conversion fee

MANILA, Philippines - The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has lowered the conversion fee for world market “D” sugar to domestic “B” sugar under the ongoing reallocation of stocks.


Through a sugar order dated June 10, SRA administrator Ma. Regina Martin ordered the reduction of the conversion fee of P20 per 50-kilogram bag to P10 per 50 per kilogram bag.

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized PHP13 million (US$287.903) worth of smuggled sugar from Thailand stuffed in 8 40-footer container vans at the Manila International Container Port (MICP), according to the Philippines' GMA TV News.


The shipments, which were declared as "school and office supplies and children's toys" came from eight different shippers, arrived on different dates, but consigned to the same importer Real Top Enterprises.

The Sugar Regulatory Administration has issued two orders to bolster domestic sugar supply, the agency said in a press statement, according to the Philippines' Visayan Daily Star newspaper.


Sugar Order 1-B provides for 100% "B" allocation for the remainder of the crop year. Under this order, sugar production starting week-ending May 31, until the end of the crop year are all classified as "B" or domestic sugar, a government press release said.

The 46 megawatts Universal Robina Corp. biomass power plant at the URC-Southern Negros Development Corp. compound in Kabankalan City is operational and was inaugurated yesterday, Kabankalan Mayor Isidro Zayco said, according to the Philippines' Visayan Daily Star newspaper.


The URC plant, that is fired by bagasse, will sell the power it produces to the Visayas grid, Zayco said.

Senators Grace Poe and Chiz Ecudero yesterday held a consultation with Negros Occidental officials to ensure that the Sugarcane Industry Development Act is implemented properly, including its PHP2 billion to be annually allocated to strengthen the competitiveness and diversification efforts of the industry, according to the Philippines' Visayan Daily Star newspaper.


 

PHILIPPINES: At least 25 containers of refined sugar smuggled out of Tagoloan

At least 25 to 30 40-footer container vans of refined sugar were successfully smuggled out of the Mindanao Container Terminal in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, last week before authorities seized over a dozen others, says Customs Deputy Commissioner Jessie Dellosa, according to the Philippines' Enquirer newspaper.


Dellosa made the statement on Friday while inspecting the 16 40-footer container vans of refined sugar, which were seized on May 24 at MCT.
