Sugarmen still seeking dialog with finance chief

The Sugar Regulatory Administration and the Sugar Alliance of the Philippines have been unable to discuss concerns over the 1 percent withholding tax on raw sugar on withdrawal from mills that has triggered confusion in the industry, Enrique Rojas, president of the National Federation of Sugarcane Planters, said yesterday.

Members of the Crusade and Alliance of Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Negros Occidental yesterday called for the stoppage and scrapping of Bureau of Internal Revenue Regulation Number 11-2014, that imposes 1 percent tax on sugar and molasses.


 

At a press conference in Bacolod City yesterday, James Cabata, an agrarian reform beneficiary in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, said that he and over 400 ARBs in their city, are against the 1 percent tax.

MANILA – The government agency overseeing the sugar industry warned that new tax rules could cause a shortage.


 

Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) chief Ma. Regina Bautista-Martin said a growing number of millers in Negros are unable to dispose of their production because of Revenue Regulation 11-2014, which slaps a one percent withholding tax when raw sugar is withdrawn from the mills.

Customs to auction confiscated sugar

Rice, sugar, and other goods seized by authorities will be up for sale in public auctions to be conducted by the Bureau of Customs (BOC), according to the Philippines' Rappler.


 

PHP38 million (US$856,732) worth of imported sugar and rice will be auctioned off this month at the Port of Manila (POM) and Port of Batangas, officials said.

4,016 bags of refined sugar seized by authorities will be auctioned off at the POM on February 13.

US agri official’s visit to cover sugar, cattle

Agriculture Undersecretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Michael Scuse of the United States is visiting Negros Occidental in March to touch base with sugar and cattle industry players.


 

This was disclosed yesterday by USDA Agricultural Counselor Ralph Bean, who accompanied by sugar industry leaders led by Sugar Regulatory Administrator Ma. Regina Martin, met with Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Maranon Jr. to inform him of the visit.
