INDIA: UP sugar production hits 2 million tonnes

The sugar production in Uttar Pradesh, India's second largest sugar producer, has touched 2 million metric tonnes in the current crushing season, according to India's Business Standard newspaper.


 

As per the latest statistics, 118 operational mills had collectively crushed nearly 21.50 million tonne of cane and produced almost 2 mn tonne of the sweetener.

Raw sugar rallies from near 3-month low, arabicas jump

LONDON/NEW YORK: Raw sugar futures on Tuesday rallied on fund and speculator buying from the prior session's three-month low, briefly triggering automatic trading curbs.


 

Arabica coffee on ICE jumped in a technically driven correction after touching a 5-1/2 month low on Monday, and was fuelled by forecasts of below-normal rainfall in Brazil.

New York cocoa futures eased, under pressure from a firmer dollar against a basket of currencies.

ED&F executive takes reins at Mexican sugar mill

(Reuters) - Grupo Saenz has installed a top executive from its shareholder ED&F Man, as the London-based sugar trader seeks to revamp one of Mexico's largest sugar mills amid weak prices and concerns about demand.


 

Max Bonzo has been named Chief Executive Officer at Grupo Saenz, following the retirement in November of Aaron Saenz, who is a member of the Saenz family that owns a 51-percent stake. ED&F has owned the remaining 49-percent share since 2007.

Massive leak of refined sugar leaves government sour [Indonesia]

A large amount of refined sugar leaked into the end-consumer market last year, a mishap that has resulted in price distortion in Southeast Asia’s largest consumer of sugar.


 

Almost 200,000 tons, more than 11 percent of the total 1.7 million tons of refined sugar produced by 11 producers between January and July 2014, spilled into the market that serves households, according to a recent sugar audit carried out by the Trade Ministry and independent surveyors.

This Pongal is a bitter season for sugarcane cultivators in the region what with agony piling up not only due to the failure of mills to settle their dues running into several crores of rupees, but also because the State Administered Price (SAP) has not yet been announced. Leave alone fixing SAP, farmers are thoroughly disappointed with the government over its silence over private mills refusing to pay even last year’s recommended price. There is no question of celebrating Pongal as no reprieve is in sight, farmers say.

Sugar cane farmers in the United States should have nothing to worry about as the nation tries to repair its trade relationship with Cuba, according to local industry officials.


 

On Dec. 17, President Barack Obama ordered the restoration of full diplomatic relations with Cuba and the opening of an embassy in Havana. This diplomatic restoration, however, won’t have an effect on Louisiana’s sugar industry, said Jim Simon, manager of the American Sugar Cane League.

Sugar beet faces a dramatic reduction in price for 2015 as high stocks and record yields in 2014 led British Sugar to cut contracts by 9%.


 

“At current prices, growers must be sure of producing sufficient yields to make a profit,” says Andersons director Nick Blake.

“I would suggest anything below 70t/ha requires further examination.”
