Frequent rainfalls across the key production areas have resulted in lower crushing rates in the week ended February 23, the latest production data for Thailand suggest.
Crushing rates remained below 1 mln tonnes per day throughout most of the week with daily sugar production volumes falling to below 110,000 tonnes. The latest numbers are a clear indication that the country is now past its peak production period.
So far in 2014/15 mills have crushed 74 mln tonnes of sugarcane, slightly up on the 73.7 mln last year. Total sugar output on the other hand fell by more than 2% to 7.7 mln tonnes (7.9 mln). Molasses output was up by more than 9% to 3.0 mln tonnes against 2.8 mln.
The overall cane crush in 2014/15 is forecast to reach between 98.5-100 mln tonnes, down from 104 mln last season.
