THE Reserve Bank of Fiji quarterly report has highlighted a 3.3% and 2.4% decline in cane crushed and sugar manufactured respectively this year compared with the same period last year, according to the Fiji Times newspaper.
According to the RBF Quarterly Review for June this year, 638,726 tonnes of crushed cane yielded 74,131 tonnes of sugar.
In its report the RBF highlighted that the decline in cane and sugar production was a result of lower production by the Rarawai and Penang mills, which started crushing a week later this year compared with last year's cane crushing season.
However, the RBF said the impact on sugar output was expected to be minimal as the improved milling efficiency noted in 2014 was likely to continue this year and offset the loss from low cane production.
