The Penang Sugar Mill in Rakiraki has resumed crushing sugarcane, according to the Fiji Broadcasting Corp.

The mill has recently been facing mechanical problems since it began crushing on June 30.

Sugar Cane Growers Council chief executive Sundresh Chetty says the Fiji Sugar Corporation has assured the problems were minor and have been rectified.

"They are trying to overcome those problems but we have raised our concern with the FSC management that our growers have brought it cutters whom they have to feed and provide accommodation and this way they are incurring expenses. So every assurance has been provided by the executive chair that they are looking into the problem and trying to overcome the problem as soon as possible."

Chetty says the other three mills are operating well and to date about 240,000 tonnes of cane have been crushed.
