Over 2 million metric tonnes of sugarcane is expected to be crushed this year producing over 240,000 tonnes of sugar from the four main mills in Fiji, according to the Fiji Broadcasting Corp.
The Labasa Sugar Mill - which is the first to begin crushing Wednesday is targeting to produce 70, 000 tonnes of sugar this season.
FSC executive chair Abdul Khan says in order to achieve this target, their basic strategy is to get a consistent supply of good quality cane.
Khan says it is also important to ensure that all mills run reliably and continuously so that they can reduce the losses and improve in terms of efficiency and extractions.
Rarawai Mill in Ba is expected to start on the 23rd, Penang on June 30 and Lautoka on July 1.
