The Brazilian government will approve an increase in the amount of ethanol mixed into the country's gasoline in the first week of February, Agriculture Minister Katia Abreu said Thursday.

All the gasoline sold at the pumps in Brazil currently has a mixture of 25% ethanol, the maximum allowed until a change to the law last year. Now the level can legally rise to 27.5%, but the size of the increase in the ethanol mix hasn't been determined yet because tests are still being carried out to see how the new upper limit will affect engines, Ms. Abreu told reporters at an interview.

The increase in the ethanol level will take effect 90 days after the approval, the minister said.

Ms. Abreu said she plans to travel to China in March to discuss various issues of importance to Brazil's agricultural sector. The minister explained that she'll ask the Chinese government to reduce the import tariff on Brazilian coffee, and to make it easier for Brazilian meat producers to get approval for their plants to export to the Asian country.
