BRAZIL: Container sugar shipments up 20% during Q4

Brazilian sugar shipments in containers totaled 567,054 tonnes in the fourth quarter of 2015, up 20% from the same period of 2014 but down 12% from Q3, data from shipping agency Williams Brazil showed Wednesday, according to Platts.

The main port of origin was Santos, with 517,752 tonnes exported during Q4, up 32% from same period in 2014. The port of Suape exported 24,916 tonnes, down 24% year on year, while Paranagua port accounted for 19,803 tonnes, down 45% year on year. The balance was exported through other Brazilian ports.

Brazilian shipments in containers totaled 2.17 million tonnes in 2015, up 6% from 2014. Exports to Africa represented roughly 55% of total exports, or 1.2 million tonnes, up 11% year on year. Exports to Yemen totaled 164,682 tonnes, a drop of 60% from 2014, data showed.

In 2015, sugar exports through all modes of transport (road, containers and vessels) totaled 24.01 million tonnes, down 0.5% from 2014, data from the Agriculture Ministry showed. The average price was US$318.23/tonnes FOB, down from US$392.06/tonnes FOB in 2014. The highest average price was US$589/tonnes FOB in 2011.

In January, Brazilian sugar exports totaled 1.5 million tonnes, with an average price of US$289.35/tonnes FOB.
