Customs' figures show the sugar import bill (beet, sugarcane, lactose syrup and lactose in solid state) amounting to US$54.71 million in January 2016, against US$120.66 million in January 2015, according to the Algerie Presse Service.
The imported quantities dropped by 159,813 tonnes against 226,303 in January 2015, Algerian Customs' National Centre for Data Processing and Statistics (CNIS) disclosed.
The bill of sugar imports fell by 54.65%, while the imported quantities declined by 29.4% compared to January 2015.
The drop in the bill is not only the result of a decline in imported quantities, but is also due to a fall in the prices of imported brown and white sugar in world markets.
It is the outcome of a better sugarcane harvest than expected and depreciation in Brazil's currency against the US dollar.
