NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines – Recent earthquakes and heavy rainfall weakened and caused the collapse of a 20-hectare tailing pond, spilling molasses wastewater into the Tañon Strait and prompting authorities to shut down a Gokongwei-owned distillery in Bais City, Negros Oriental, on Monday, October 27.
The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in the Negros Island Region (NIR) issued an interim cease and desist order against the Universal Robina Corporation’s (URC) Bais Distillery after the pond gave way on Sunday, October 26, contaminating the northern part of Bais Bay within the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape (TSPS).
The spill from the plant, which produces fuel-grade anhydrous ethanol, also affected the popular Manjuyod white sandbar, prompting the town’s mayor, Raffy Andaya, to suspend tourism activities in the area on Monday as a response to the water discoloration.
