The Cabinet has approved a budget of 5.3 billion baht to encourage sugarcane farmers to cut good-quality fresh sugarcane instead of burning it at a rate of 69 baht per ton of sugarcane to reduce PM2.5 dust for the 2567/2568 production season.
17 Jun 2568 Mr. Chulaphan Amornvivat, Deputy Minister of Finance and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) It was revealed that the Cabinet meeting on 17 June 2568 resolved to assign BAAC to work with the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB) to prepare.
“Measures to help sugarcane farmers harvest good quality fresh sugarcane to reduce PM2.5 dust” For the 2567/2568 production season, to encourage sugarcane farmers to harvest good quality fresh sugarcane instead of burning, reduce air pollution, fine dust (PM2.5), and elevate Thailand's sugarcane and sugar industry to a green economy industry.
By supporting money for sugarcane farmers who cut good quality fresh sugarcane at a rate of 69 baht per ton of sugarcane, it is expected that the 2567/2568 production season will have a total sugarcane volume of 93.17 million tons, with a proportion of good quality fresh sugarcane at 80 percent or approximately 75 million tons, resulting in a total budget support of 5,333.5875 million baht, divided into:
(1) Expenses for incentive measures for sugarcane farmers to harvest fresh sugarcane by paying support money to sugarcane farmers at a rate of 69 baht per ton, with an operating budget of 5,175 million baht.
(2) The operational expenses of BAAC, including compensation for financial costs and management costs, totaling 158.5875 million baht.
BAAC is ready to transfer the money after receiving the list of farmers from the Sugarcane and Sugar Fund Office within 3 days. BAAC will use the bank's reserve funds to pay the entire budget first and propose an annual budget for repayment. The government will compensate for the fiscal burden according to Section 20(5) of the Fiscal Discipline Act B.E. 2561.
The measures were designed under the WTO’s environmental commitments, aiming to help farmers upgrade the productivity of the Thai sugarcane and sugar industry to a new economy that cares about the environment. This measure is another important step in tackling environmental issues along with improving the quality of life of Thai farmers.
